Memorial Stair Climb
The first Lancaster Stair Climb was held on September 11, 2011, the tenth anniversary of the collapse of the World Trade Towers. The Stair Climb is held at Clipper Magazine Stadium, home of the Lancaster Barnstormer baseball team. This years Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, September 10.
The event opens with an exercise warm-up period, followed by a time of remembrance for the fallen FDNY firefighters. The climbers then start the Climb weaving up and down stadium stairs five times for the equivalent of 110 stories. The Climb stops twice, at 9:59 and 10:28, to commemorate the collapse of each tower. At the conclusion, all climbers gather for a group picture.
The Stair Climb is not a race. It takes between one hour and 30 minutes to two hours to complete the climb. Full turnout gear or gym clothing can be worn. Drinking water is provided throughout the event.
Each year the number of participants has increased. The 2016 Climb had 445 participants. Our goal each year is to have one participant for each FDNY firefighter who gave his life on 9/11/2001.
